About Crusaders Squash
The Crusaders Squash Club was founded in 1975 and competes in the Eastern Province men’s and women’s leagues.
The club is situated in Park Drive, Central in Port Elizabeth and is a sub-section of the PE Crusaders Sports Club. The remaining sub-sections are athletics (roadrunning), cricket, hockey and rugby.
The club premises double up as the city’s international cricket venue, St George’s Park, the field where South Africa played their first cricket and rugby Tests in 1888-89 and 1891 respectively. The ground is also used by the EP cricket team.
A perk for members of the club is access to the members’ stand in the main pavilion, which provides catering and refreshment facilities in a controlled and pleasant environment when major provincial and international sports matches are played at the ground. The club provides an ideal opportunity for members to entertain guests and clients.
Besides operating teams in the men’s and women’s leagues, the club holds an internal summer league incorporating 12 teams (84 players) from November to February.
In 2011, a Corporate League was started involving 12 teams from various businesses in Port Elizabeth, played over five weeks during October.
The club holds several tournaments during the year, including the Barton-Driscoll doubles event in January, the club championships and the Crusaders Challenge.
Besides the bar in the main clubhouse, the squash club runs a pub at the courts, which is manned from Monday to Thursday.
The club’s access control is via a fingerprint system and the payment for lights to play is done on an all-in basis, with members paying a lump sum for use of lights during the year.
